FASTING

What is Fasting?

Simply stated, biblical fasting is refraining
from food for a spiritual purpose.

Why Does King'sGate Practice Fasting?

Fasting was an expected discipline in both the Old and New Testament eras. For example, Moses fasted at least two, forty-day periods. Jesus fasted 40 days and reminded His followers to do the same saying, "when you fast," not if you fast.

Fasting and prayer can restore the loss of the "first love" for your Lord and result in a more intimate relationship with Christ.

Fasting is a biblical way to truly humble yourself in the sight of God (Psalm 35:13; Ezra 8:21). King David said, "I humble myself through fasting.“

Fasting enables the Holy Spirit to reveal your true spiritual condition, resulting in brokenness, repentance, and a transformed life.

Fasting can help you get back your passion and it can recharge you!

•The Holy Spirit will quicken the Word of God in your heart and His truth will become more meaningful to you!
• Fasting can transform your prayer life into a richer and more personal experience.
• Fasting can result in a dynamic personal revival in your own life and make you a channel of revival to others.
• Fasting and prayer are the only disciplines that fulfill the requirements of
       II Chronicles 7:14.
"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.“

Fasting is one of the most powerful weapons God has ever given us for our daily lives.

Should I fast?

•Are you in need of healing or a miracle?
•Do you need the tender touch of God in your life?
•Is there a dream inside you that only He can make possible
•Are you in need of a fresh encounter with God?
•Do you desire a deeper, more intimate and powerful relationship with the Lord?
•Are you ready to have heightened sensitivity to the desires of God?
•Do you need to break away from bondages that have been holding you hostage?
•Is there a friend or loved one that needs Salvation?
•Do you desire to know God's will for your life?

(If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you will benefit from fasting.)

How Can I Prepare Spiritually?

Confess you sins to God.  Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of weakness. Forgive all who have offended you and ask forgiveness from those you may have offended. (Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4, 17:3-4)
Surrender you life fully to Jesus Christ and reject any worldly desires that try to hinder you. (Romans 12:1-2)

What Should I Fast?

The type of fasting you choose is up to you. You could go on a full fast in which you only drink liquids, or you may desire to fast like Daniel, who abstained from sweets and meats, and the only liquid he drank was water.  Remember to replace that time with prayer and Bible study.

How Long Should I Fast?

You may fast as long as you like.  Most can easily fast from one to three days, but you may feel the grace to go longer, even as much as 21 to 40 days.

Use wisdom and pray for guidance!

What Can I Expect?

You are following Jesus' example when you fast. (Matt. 4:2) Spend time listening to prasie and worship.  Pray as often as you can throught the day.  Get away from the normal distractions as much as possible and keep your heart and mind set on seeking God's face. (Psalm 27:8)

How Do I Make This Count Spiritually?

We want to encourage you to target your prayers during the fast.  Two specific areas we will be focusing on together are breakthrough and vision.

Because we sometimes come to a place of feeling tired, dull, or empty, we need to bring about an atmosphere of breakthrough so that we can accomplish God's vision for our lives.  Fasting and prayer restore energy, refocus vision, and revive deferred hopes and forgotten dreams.

Breakthrough begins with us yielding more of ourselves to God.  Then, the vision of God's will becomes clearer.  Spiritually, we can go to places we've never been before and do what has never been done.

We encourage you to seek the Lord in prayer, and let your decisions about your biblical fasting come from Him.  We believe that, as we pray, seek God and give Him our best at the first of the year, He will bless our ENTIRE year.
(Matt 6:33)

BIBLICAL FASTING FOCUS

"I exhort therefore, that, fist of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."
(1Timothy 2:1-2)
“Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."
(Matthew 6:16-18)
"Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."
(Romans 12:1)
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
(Matthew 6:33)
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the [a]heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?"

(Isaiah 58:6)

Make sure you take the time to journal what God is saying or revealing to you during your time of fasting and prayer!
And enjoy the journey.
